A jagged steel roofscape shelters giant open terraces on the Lateral Verandah Home, a dwelling close to Pune, India, designed by native studio Malik Structure.
The house sits on a steep, densely forested web site with dramatic views of the Tung Fort ruins to the east, shut to a different residential venture by the studio.

Referencing this historic fort, Lateral Verandah Home was constructed on a plinth of uncooked basalt stone, which steps down the location’s slope to create a gradual shift in ranges.
“The familiarity and historic software of this stone in each kind of shelter, from the village house to the forts, turns these heavy parts right into a constructed panorama,” defined Malik Structure.

“In every single place, there are allusions to the environment and to the previous,” the studio continued.
The house is organised throughout two ranges, with sleeping and mechanical areas housed within the stone base and dwelling areas opening onto giant terraces occupying the brilliant and open higher stage.
Stepping and rotating barely as they transfer down the hillside, these dwelling areas are wrapped to the north by a big infinity pool with a picket terrace alongside its edge.
Full-height home windows and glass doorways shaded by picket screens permit the decrease bedrooms to open onto a sheltered terrace round a big tree.

Lateral Verandah Home’s angular roofscape is supported by a mixture of metal columns and flitch beams, lined in sheets of corrugated steel which can be left seen. These sheets are punctured at factors to permit gentle to enter or bushes to develop by means of.
“The roof follows the stepping plinth because it adapts to the gradual shift in ranges,” stated the studio. “It undulates, shifts, sidesteps, hovers and permits the passage of the hill and of the present bushes because it supplies shade and frames the close to and distant views.”

The fabric contrasts of the outside are carried by means of to the interiors. The higher ranges have a minimal, modern end of glass and white partitions, whereas the decrease stage is outlined by uncovered stonework and concrete.
Mumbai-based Malik Structure was based by Kamal Malik in 1976. Earlier initiatives by the studio embrace Home of Voids in Delhi, which was shortlisted within the city home class of Dezeen Awards 2022.
